On the morning of August 27, five girls from the remote mount village of Khamagobe embarked on an extraordinary journey. It wasn’t just their first airplane ride; it was their maiden voyage beyond the familiar confines of their village and the walls of the Kanyampara SDA Vocational Secondary School they attend. These girls are their village’s future leaders because they had the transformative opportunity to participate in the Sauti Ya Dada (SYD) leadership program of WWK’s network partner, Creative Action Institute. Their destination was Nairobi, Kenya, the stage for the Summit of SYD adolescent girls from across East Africa. The theme of this year’s Summit was Climate Change – a global challenge that we all, across borders are impacted by and a concern that demands collaborative solutions. In parallel, the Summit focused on creative thinking and group innovation. The girls from WWK’s local partner Bliss Feme in Kasese District presented their advocacy projects that were generated by their own experiences and those facing their community: early marriages, domestic violence, and school dropout. The girls not only had the privilege to showcase their projects, but to engage in a rich exchange of ideas. They also honed their advocacy and mobilization skills and prepared themselves with the knowledge and determination to effect real change in their community. Despite the very real challenges of their remote mountain village, the girls saw first-hand the world of opportunities for their dreams and confidence to build a brighter future.
